Sonia Chu

Sonia Chu was born in beautiful Sleepy Hollow, New York, and at 3 years old, she moved with parents to Colorado. Joining Denver Chinese School preschool class in 2005, she has since completed all levels of the school’s curriculum (preschool, Pinyin, first grade, Ma Liping grades 2 through 10, and AP Chinese) and won Denver Chinese School’s Outstanding Student Award every year. Her other Chinese achievements include: Chinese Hanban New HSK Level-4 (2010), First Prize in Colorado Chinese Essay Competition (2013), Outstanding Performance Prize in the 3rd Annual US Chinese Essay Contest for Youth (2014), and full scores on both the College Board SAT II Chinese (2015) and AP Chinese exams (2016). Starting from the fall semester of 2016, Sonia began serving as a teaching assistant at Denver Chinese School.

In 2013, Sonia reestablished the Denver Chinese School Highlands Ranch Student Council as president, with Vivian Zheng. Ever since, she has whole-heartedly conducted a variety of student activities with the help of the DCS school board, taking part in a wide variety of activities both within and outside Denver Chinese School such as MC-ing and participating in preparations for DCS celebrations, volunteering at Colorado’s largest Annual Chinese New Year Celebrations, soliciting for donations to DCS, and organizing monthly DCS volunteer trips to Denver Rescue Mission. Denver Chinese School has honored Sonia for consecutive years for her outstanding community services.

Sonia is eager to help the community outside of Chinese School as well whenever she can and volunteers at the Douglas County Libraries and Rocky Heights Middle School MathCounts Club as student coach. She participates in many Rock Canyon High School clubs such as NHS, CNHS, Science Olympiad, and Math Club.

Sonia loves mathematics and science; she has earned awards in state and national competitions and activities. She also enjoys drawing, running track, skiing, swimming, and playing the clarinet, having played principal clarinet in multiple ensembles and orchestras.
